What to Expect
Please arrive at Borderland State Park no later than 12:30. The games begin promptly at 1:00. The event typically runs for approximately 2 hours.
Scouts are split into teams made up of multiple ranks to ensure that teams are balanced (to the best of our ability) and rotate through stations to complete outdoor challenges and activities. Typically there are 6 stations.
The teams compete by completing each station. Each team will have ~15 minutes at each station to complete the challenge/activity and earn points based on teamwork, time, and other measures. Once a challenge/activity is complete, the scouts will have ~5 minutes to transition to the next station until they complete all challenges/activities.
Bundle up! This event is an OUTDOOR, WINTER event. Please dress appropriately for cold temperatures and snow. This includes all participants (scouts and adults). Warm winter snow boots, hats, gloves/mittens, scarves, ski pants/snowsuits should be worn. We strongly recommend that you have back-up clothing in the car in the event it is needed. Remember, the goal is to have fun and enjoy the outdoors, but it's sure to be cold, so bundle up!!
Who can participate?
All scout ranks are encouraged to participate and we hope to have at least one (1) Arrow of Light scout for each team. Each scout must have an adult present for the duration of the event.
What do the adults do?
We’re so glad you asked! You will be able to spend time with your scout and watch them as they compete in each of the challenges/activities. Besides spending time making memories and bonding with your scout, adults have an opportunity to run a station (approx. 30-40 minutes).
In order for the event to be a success, we NEED volunteers to set up, run the stations and breakdown the event. We also need two (2) to three (3) volunteers to transport the equipment to and from the storage at the Rose Garden. Please contact Antonio Wendland (AWendland@verizon.net) if you are able to volunteer for this.
What challenges/activities do the scouts complete?
The activities vary and will be announced at the event. The rules for each challenge are explained at each station.
This event is free to participate. However, as all Massachusetts State Parks do, Borderland State Park charges a fee for parking. Typically the fee is $5 for Massachusetts residents and $10 for non-residents. If a Massachusetts State Parking pass, your parking pass covers Borderland. Some libraries, including Mansfield Public Library allow you to borrow a Massachusetts State Parks parking pass free of charge when you reserve it in advance.
